Joel Sparrow, in his own words
If he could speak to us today, Joel Sparrow might describe his life as follows.

Daniel Allen was the surety on my bond when I married Elizabeth Allen in Halifax County 3 October (bond) 1821.  But she evidently wasn’t my wife for long.
The Census of 1850 for the Northern District of Halifax County counted me, age 49, with Sarah A. Sparrow, age 52. Ann E. Sparrow, undoubtedly our daughter, was still with us at age 25 and we were honored to have my 80-year-old father, Reuben, living in our household.
Our daughter Elizabeth, who married Wesley Guthrie, named her eldest daughter Sarah Ann Harvey Guthrie indicating that my second wife and her mother was Sarah Ann Harvey. I died during the Civil War leaving a will in Halifax County providing for Sarah and our three daughters, one of whom was already widowed.

Joel and Sally, aged 60 and 56, were residing in the Northern District to Halifax County in 1860.
His will, which he made 19 Aug. 1857 and was recorded 27 Aug. 1862, gave Sarah land and slaves, mentioned daughters Ann and Elizabeth Guthrie and Polly Crews and her heirs, of whom he named Betsy Ann. He appointed sons-in-law Chastain C. Guthrie and Wesley H. Guthrie executors and appointed them guardians to Polly’s children.
